When working with multichoice questions (also referred to as multi-response questions), there are two different ways that the questions can be coded and structured.
Multichoice questions can be coded as either binary or category, but are not interchangeable (i.e. the question structures cannot be mixed together).
Multichoice Binary questions:
-
Data is structured by including each possible variable as a response of [1="selected" 0="not selected"] or [1="yes"] or similar.
variable (1) Reasons For Purchase: Price
1 - Selected
0 - Not selected
variable (2) Reasons For Purchase: Manufacturer's Reputation
1 - Selected
0 - Not selected
variable (3) Reasons For Purchase: Quality
1 - Selected
0 - Not selected
variable (4) Reasons For Purchase: Owned Previous Model
1 - Selected
0 - Not selected
variable (5) Reasons For Purchase: Unique
1 - Selected
0 - Not selected
-
Typically have question text ending in "
Choose all that apply" or similar.
-
There is usually no maximum number of responses that can be selected.
-
The Binary question structure is the more common type of multichoice question included in surveys, compared to Category multichoice.
Multichoice Category questions:
-
Data is structured with a coded list of worded responses.
Reasons For Purchase (1)
1 - Price
2 - Manufacturer's Reputation
3 - Quality
4 - Owned Previous Model
5 - Unique
Reasons For Purchase (2)
1 - Price
2 - Manufacturer's Reputation
3 - Quality
4 - Owned Previous Model
5 - Unique
Reasons For Purchase (3)
1 - Price
2 - Manufacturer's Reputation
3 - Quality
4 - Owned Previous Model
5 - Unique
-
Typically have question text ending in "
Choose your 3 most important features...", "
Select your 5 favorites...", etc.
-
There is a maximum number of responses that can be selected.
Refer to the next two sections for details and steps on converting each multichoice question type.
To convert questions to multichoice, select all of the individual questions that will make up the responses of the new multichoice question, then click the Merge button.
The selected questions will appear in a window for confirmation.
Any questions that should not be included can be removed by clicking the X.
Assign a name to the new multichoice question and click OK to confirm.
All of the individual questions that previously appeared listed on the left side of the editor window will be replaced with the new multichoice question.
Make additional edits to the multichoice question or to return to the individual questions, by using the Unmerge or Edit buttons located at the bottom of the page.
Note: the multichoice conversion currently only works with multichoice category questions. Support for multichoice binary will be included in the next release.
