Main window is similar for categorical and numeric questions. Differences are described in following sections. Double click on window name to maximize / minimize.

Recode - Overview

1

Set name for recoded question

1. Set name for recoded question
Default is the old name with [R] annotation.
2

Set category

2. Set category
Depending on what you choose here, your recoded question will be either categorical or numeric.
The process of defining a numeric recode vs a categorical recode is different only in the aspect, that for numeric recode you need to additionally provide numeric values to each of the resulting (recoded) responses.
3

Switch between many possible variants of the same question

3. Switch between many possible variants of the same question
If you are working on multiple datasets, it is possible that the same question is using different responses table across those datasets. If you want your recode to be applicable to all of those datasets, you have to perform the recode for each of the variants of the question.
The % in the list window shows the progress of recoding (how many answers are already covered with new recode). "Show only unmapped responses" allows you to easily find answers which are not covered with new recode.
4

Select dataset scope

4. Select dataset scope
A scope of dataset can be defined, for which the User defined filter will be available (for details see Setting a dataset scope for a recode).
5

Create

5. Create
Allows you to recode the selected answer with a new label.
6

Remove

6. Remove
Removes labels from selected answers.
7

Copy

7. Copy
Copies the answer label as a recoded label. For example copy label A as a recoded label A.
8

Permanent vs report scoped recode

8. Permanent vs report scoped recode
9

Sort

9. Sort
Double click on title to sort by "Label" or "Recoded label".
10

Show only categories with cases

10. Show only categories with cases
If selected, list of categories is restricted only to these with cases.
11

Recode reusability

Using this menu you can choose, whether the created recode should only be used only for the current variable or also for other variables (for details see Create reusable mapping).
12

Filter responses

12. Filter responses

Filter the responses of the original variable so that only those values are visible which are mapped onto a given response. You can do that by clicking on the grey filter symbol that appears when placing the cursor on the right hand side of the ribbon representing that recoded response in the Resulting response table. In order to delete the filter, click on the blue filter symbol that appears above the list of values of the original variable.

13

Edit response

13. Edit response
You can edit the response and change its label.
14

Delete response

14. Delete response
Clicking this button will delete this response.
15

Export/ Import XLS

15. Export/ Import XLS
Export/ Import XLS (see Exporting / Importing recodes).
